Born in Finland, she spent her life in Sweden where she is recognised as a liberal person, a philanthropist and a feminist. A long journey through the United States furnished the material for a thorough study of a society she admired and which disappointed her at the same time. Slavery in the Southern states and Cuba frightened her, but the beauty of the tropics and the plantations fascinated her.
