Brazilian-born, raised in France and then married to a Frenchman. Living in circles close to Louis-Philippe and then Napoleon III, she also owned a plantation in Brazil, where she took the initiative of emancipating her slaves. She supervised the education of Isabel, Princess Imperial of Brazil, who signed the act of abolition in that country. She left no accounts but correspondence and a diary.
