Melle Lenglet (or Langlet) was born at St Jean d’Angely, and at seventeen married Alexandre Dufreynois, a hussar from Melle (Deux-Sèvres) who dreamed only of adventure. Thus she was to spend fifteen years in Brazil, where the couple attempted to make their fortune by any means, slave trafficking and diamond prospecting included; Dufreynois met his end during this quest. It would be years before Langlet saved enough money for the return journey to France, where she took up residence close to her family at Blaye, by Bordeaux.

Quinze ans au Brésil ou excursions à la Diamantine, Bordeaux, Chariol, 1861.
