French. Woman of letters. At the age of nineteen, in 1839, she embarked for Spitsbergen in the Arctic Ocean with a scientific expedition. Some years after her return, her love affair with Victor Hugo was the cause of great misfortune. To earn a living for herself and her two children she became a writer and a columnist for women’s magazines.
